Uploading your first files (File Manager).
So you setup a hosting account, but your website is blank! I think it's time we start uploading some files. Benoks provides FTP and online file uploading to make you life easier when editing a website. In this guide we will be looking at how to upload your first website files and different ways to do so.
In this guide we will be using File Manager found in your cPanel account. So first we need to login, remembering to use the details you were given (if you haven't changed them since). When you have successfully logged into cPanel scroll down and look for the "Files" category. In there is an icon called "File Manager" (if you are using a slower internet connection we suggest using the "Legacy File Manager" which uses the same principles as the new version). When you have clicked the icon a little window will appear asking you which directory to open. As we are uploading to the website itself we need to open the "Document Root", if you are using more than one domain then you can select it with the dropdown box. Click "Go" to open the File Manager (this may open in a new window).
So now File Manager is open! You should be in "/public_html". This is the location you need to upload files to for them to be shown on your website - if not locate public_html and open it. Welcome to File Manager! File Manager includes many functions such as; code editor, file uploading, HTML editor, permission changing and much more. For now we need to look at the "Upload" button which is found on the top bar. Click it to open a new window, when this window has opened you will be shown three boxes. These boxes are where you upload files from your computer to your account. To start uploading click "Browse", you will be shown a new window which will let you find a file on your computer, when you have found your file click "Open". The file will start uploading! If you need more than the default of three boxes you can click the "Add Another Upload Box" to let you upload more files. When all of your files are uploaded you can now close the window.
Well done! You have uploaded your files. To view these, open your website, e.g. <!-- m --><A href="http://joebloggs.benokshosting.co.uk/">http://joebloggs.benokshosting.co.uk - you should now see your files. If you do not see anything apart from a folder called "cgi-bin" then you will need to make sure that you uploaded the files to the correct folder (public_html).
That's all for now. Look out for our guide on using FTP clients.
