Started in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level names remained active.
